Summertime is right around the corner and you know what that means: Put away those hats! It’s time to free the ‘fro, girl! I’d like to help you embrace your inner artist and try out some new styles. Even if quarantine isn’t over for you, you can still enjoy these styles. Here are 10 summertime natural hairstyles and trends you might find in 2021.
1. TWA

The first style that I recommend for summer 2021 is the teeny weeny afro (TWA). It’s so refreshing to have short, fluffy hair during hot summers. The TWA is great because it’ll give you a fresh start. If you struggle with split ends, broken hair, or maybe you went back to straightening your hair, summertime is the perfect time to chop it all off again.
2. Bantu Knots with slayed edges

Bantu knots are one of the rarest styles that I’ve seen naturals wear. Usually, you see this style in Avante Garde magazines or on slayed Instagram models, but I believe that it’s time that the everyday natural girl gives it a shot. Not only are bantu knots easy to put into your hair, but the moment that you decide to take them out you have a second hairstyle. Bantu knot outs (similar to the twist out) are some of the prettiest coils that I’ve ever seen. If you haven’t given bantu knots a try yet, I recommend that you give them a shot this summer.
3. Flexi rod twists

Yes, flexirod twists. If you work a 9 to 5 and need a professional, but playful, style to wear around the office this summer, then this is the style for you. Flexi rod twists will easily give you fluffy, stretched curls that would make Shirley Temple jealous. Another thing that I like about this style is that you can put it up into a pineapple hairstyle if your curls are starting to lose their luster. Finally, flexi-rod twist are great because there are so many ways to style them and you can choose how tight, loose, big, or small your twists are.
4. Passion Twists

Passion twists are another amazing style that you should try this summer. Passion twists are one of the easiest synthetic hair twists that I’ve ever seen. Essentially, all you do is wrap the twists and let them shrink on you. Once they’re finished, you have beautiful twists. But if you’re further along in your natural hair journey and you want to twist your own hair, you can do that too! These twists are so beautiful, versatile, and a perfect protective style for any natural of any hair length.
5. Puffs

I’m sure that if you’ve been natural for at least a year you’ve worn puffs in your hair. But there are so many puff styles out there that you have to try. You can do a pineapple, pigtail puffs, slick back hair with puffs, or braids with puffs. There are even more than that, but this list has other great styles that I need to highlight. But please, sis, don’t sleep on puffs.
6. Comb Curls

If you recently did a big chop or you keep your hair short, this will be a great hairstyle for you. Now, if you’re not familiar with comb curls, I may just be introducing you to your next best friend. Basically, after you detangle your TWA, you use a rattail comb and curling gel to make tiny, wavy curls in your hair. These waves and coils are absolutely beautiful and give a modern, 1920s look. Definitely look up this style if you can today.
7. Twist Outs

Twist outs have been a staple for so many naturals (especially for me), but I’ve been hearing that more and more women avoid them because of how it makes their hair look. I recommend trying a different way to twist or braid your hair to achieve this look. If it doesn’t look good when you section your hair and twist out from your scalp, try doing a platted twist. Platted twists will organize your look and keep the style uniform. I’ve found them to be a much faster method for me anyway. And if you’ve tried platted twists in the past, then try adding a curler set to your twist out. There are a plethora of options out there just waiting to be tried. I recommend this classic for your summertime routine.
8. Headwraps

Headwraps are hot right now, and I am here for them! They’re an excellent protective style that keeps your hair clean longer and significantly reduces breakage. In the summer, I love doing a wet twist out, throwing on a bonnet, and headwrap, and running my errands for the day. On days where the temperature climbs to one hundred degrees, having a cool head is very refreshing. Headwraps are also great if your braids are on their last leg and you want to cover the top. There are so many different styles and ways to wear headwraps that you’ll inevitably find your perfect style. Give them a try today!
9. Wax Dyes

Dying your hair is one the riskiest things that a natural can do to their hair. Some say that it’s a death sentence to their length if you even try it. But if you still want to change colours and you don’t want to use synthetic hair, I recommend trying colour wax. It’s a light liquid wax that doesn’t harm your hair. It simply rests on your hair and can change your hair colour for up to a week. There are so many great colours out there, but I still recommend researching which wax is best for you and how to use it before investing in one. 10. Chunky Braids

Another great trend has been the chunky braids. It’s a playful style that emphasizes edges, length, and the shape of your face. If you have shorter hair and want chunky braids, I recommend getting synthetic hair and braiding it in. You can keep your style in for up to four weeks (depending on how you care for your hair).
Summertime is an excellent time for trying out new styles. Even if adventures don’t await you outside, you can always go on an adventure from within. Try out these new styles and let us know which ones you liked or what we missed.
